Every Green Home Remodeling project specifies materials that are healthier for your family and lighter on the planet. Here's what those certifications and material choices actually mean - and why they matter for your LA home.
USGBC's LEED is the world's most widely recognized green building rating system. Points are earned across energy, water, materials, indoor air quality, and site categories. Levels: Certified, Silver, Gold, Platinum.
LEED Gold+ homes and offices command 3–8% rent premiums in LA and qualify for the City of LA's Green Building Fast Track (4–8 weeks faster permits on new construction).
California's alternative to LEED for residential construction - faster, cheaper to certify, and specifically calibrated for California climate zones. Managed by Build It Green. Points earned in energy, IAQ, resources, water, and community.
GreenPoint Rated homes qualify for reduced-cost green mortgage products (Fannie Mae Green Rewards, some California credit unions) and LA Green Building Fast Track permitting. Cheaper to achieve than LEED for residential projects.
EPA's ENERGY STAR program certifies products and homes that use 10–30% less energy than standard. ENERGY STAR appliances are required to qualify for IRA 25C tax credits. New ENERGY STAR Certified Homes must score ≤ 60 on the Home Energy Rating (HERS) scale.
ENERGY STAR is the baseline for most federal and LADWP incentives. Any appliance we install that qualifies for IRA 25C or LADWP rebates carries ENERGY STAR certification - we verify this for every product specified.
FSC certification verifies that wood products come from responsibly managed forests - protecting biodiversity, worker rights, and carbon storage. The FSC chain-of-custody certification follows wood from forest to installed product.
In California, sourcing FSC-certified lumber contributes to LEED MR credits. It also directly reduces your project's embodied carbon - the carbon embedded in materials before the home is ever occupied, which can represent 50%+ of a building's lifetime carbon footprint.
C2C-certified products are designed to be safely cycled back into biological or technical systems at end of life - no landfill waste. Certification scores products on material health, material reutilization, renewable energy use, water stewardship, and social fairness.
We specify C2C-certified products in kitchens and bathrooms where lifecycle matters most: countertops, tile, flooring, and insulation. These choices earn LEED MR credits and reduce lifetime waste from your renovation.
California's CARB Phase 2 standards are the strictest formaldehyde emission limits for composite wood products in the world. CARB-compliant products contain no-added-urea-formaldehyde (NAUF) or are formaldehyde-free - critical for indoor air quality.
Every cabinet, panel, and composite wood product we install is CARB Phase 2 compliant. In LA's often-closed indoor environments (sealed for AC), off-gassing from non-CARB products can accumulate to harmful levels. All our finishes use low-VOC or zero-VOC formulations.
What we specify instead of conventional materials - and why each choice matters.
Every project gets a written spec sheet listing all certifications, VOC levels, and sustainability data for materials we'll use - so you know exactly what's going into your home.
