Spring is the busiest construction season in Los Angeles - permit queues stretch, the best subcontractors book out 6–10 weeks, and material lead times wobble. Smart planning in February and March is what separates a smooth spring start from a frustrating one.
Lock in Your Permits Early
LADBS plan-check volumes spike 40% between March and June. Submit complete plans in January or February to land permits before the rush. For ADUs, the SB-9 lot-split + ADU combination still works in 2026 and qualifies for streamlined ministerial review under updated state law.
Order Long-Lead Items Now
- Custom windows: 6–10 weeks (longer for steel/Crittall styles)
- Cabinetry: 8–14 weeks for custom shops
- Solar panels and inverters: typically 4–6 weeks but check net-metering paperwork status with your utility
- Engineered roof trusses: 4–8 weeks
- Specialty tile and stone: 6–12 weeks if imported
Book Your Trades Before the Rush
The good electricians, plumbers, and HVAC techs are fully booked by April. We lock in our sub commitments by mid-February and pay deposit retainers where needed. If you're owner-managing, get signed contracts from every trade by March 1.
Plan Around the Spring Wind Season
March and April bring sustained 20–40 mph afternoon winds across the basin and valley. Schedule stucco, paint, and rough framing for morning hours; defer rooftop solar mounting until winds are forecast under 25 mph.
Stack Your Rebates and Incentives
Spring is the right time to plan a multi-measure project that stacks federal credits (25C up to $3,200/year, 25D 30% solar/battery) with LADWP Consumer Rebate Program funds and SoCalGas EE rebates. Done right, a $50,000 efficiency-and-electrification package can net $12,000–$18,000 in incentives in 2026.
