Understanding Different Types of Solar Batteries: A Guide from Your Trusted Contractor in LA

Battery storage went from optional to essential between 2023 and 2026. With the CPUC's NEM 3.0 Net Billing Tariff in full effect across California's IOUs - and LADWP running its own evolving net-metering program - batteries are what make residential solar pencil today. Here's a current-as-of-2026 guide to the battery options actually being installed in LA homes.

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Dominates

Every major residential battery on the LA market in 2026 uses LFP chemistry - safer, longer-cycle-life (6,000+ cycles), and no cobalt. Tesla Powerwall 3, Enphase IQ Battery 5P, Franklin aPower, FranklinWH, and SolarEdge Home Battery all run LFP. NMC batteries (older Powerwall 2 generation) have largely been phased out of new installs.

Top Systems on the LA Market

  • Tesla Powerwall 3: 13.5 kWh, integrated solar inverter, whole-home backup
  • Enphase IQ Battery 5P: 5 kWh modular (stack up to 80 kWh), microinverter ecosystem
  • Franklin aPower 2: 15 kWh, robust DIY-friendly app, transparent pricing
  • FranklinWH FHP: 13.6 kWh, generator integration, smart home control
  • SolarEdge Home Battery: 9.7 kWh, pairs natively with SolarEdge inverters

Sizing for Your House

For peak-shifting alone under today's export economics, 10–13 kWh is the sweet spot for most LA homes. For whole-home backup including AC and EV charging during outages, 20–30 kWh is realistic. The right answer depends on your peak-window usage and backup priorities - we model both scenarios before recommending.

AC-Coupled vs. DC-Coupled

AC-coupled batteries (Powerwall, Franklin) can be added to any existing solar system. DC-coupled batteries (Enphase, SolarEdge) are more efficient (96–98% round-trip vs. 89–92%) but typically require matched-brand solar inverters. For new installs, DC-coupled wins on efficiency; for retrofits, AC-coupled is the easier upgrade.

Incentives Stack

30% federal credit applies to standalone battery installs (since 2023) - you don't need to pair with solar. California SGIP rebates still active for qualifying low-income, fire-zone, and medically vulnerable households. Some are now covering 100% of battery cost for eligible customers.

Pick the Right Battery the First Time
